Us. Combining Identities.

The project was conducted with high school students at RISD's Project Open Door. The underlying theme of this session was complex identities. The idea was to learn to acknowledge, appreciate and celebrate each others' personalities by creating a hybrid clay caricature. The students chose characteristic properties of each others personalities like hair color/texture, nose, eye color, skin tone, accessories like spectacles, hair tie, etc. They then mapped out a rough portrait on paper which eventually was transformed into a 3D model. They went through with this process in less than 2 hours.
The inspiration for this lesson was drawn from exquisite corpse, the idea of building along. This activity did not involve direct collaboration but instead everyone became a living part of each others' artworks.
