Painting Music

This project was conducted in the form of an art workshop with high school students at RISD's Project Open Door. The assignment was aimed at using multi-sensory modalities to create art. There were two main elements at the core of this project, music and tactile/texture painting. My focus was on exploring the ways in which one might navigate sound and sight at the same time. The students chose a song/music piece/a short playlist to work with. They spent the first couple of minutes listening to and visualizing the details of the music they were listening to. They spent the rest of the class painting the music while still listening to it. This project was fairly open ended and it was wonderful to watch each student have a different approach to decoding music and transforming it into a visual artwork. They worked with various elements of music like bass, beats, strings, vocals, lyrics, etc.
